Body Rehab of Mercer County - Our Approach

Dr. Bencivengo’s Philosophy for the Treatment of Neck & Back Complaints

My philosophy on the treatment of the neck & back complaints encompasses a comprehensive approach consisting of physical therapy, spinal manipulation and exercise rehabilitation. We provide instruction on home exercise and proper biomechanics in respect to lifting, sitting, sleeping, etc.

It is my opinion that the majority of spinal related complaints are due to structural abnormalities of the spine causing functional abnormalities. Translated in more understandable terms, this means that if spinal vertebras are not in their normal position they irritate the spinal joints, which causes joint irritation. This causes the spine to function abnormally and results in pain and muscle spasm.

At our office we treat pain and spasm with various physical therapies (the same physical therapies which are used by physical therapist) spinal manipulation is also performed which is used to treat the cause of the problem, which is spinal structural abnormalities. This treatment eliminates the cause of the problem not just the symptoms of pain and spasm. If the case requires it, we also perform active rehabilitative exercise in our fully equipped, state of the art exercise center. We utilize free weights and resistive exercise equipment as well as aerobic equipment, such as treadmills, bikes, and elliptical.
It is my opinion that the majority of spine related problems are not curable but can be improved upon with the comprehensive treatment approach noted above. I do refer medical physicians when the condition warrants more invasive methods but at all times we first attempt to treat our patients in a safe drugless, non-surgical manner.
If you haven’t tried chiropractic care are looking for an alternative treatment, which doesn’t include the standard medications used to treat this conditions (which in my experience are either not effective in treating the cause of the problem, treats symptoms only or have significant side effects and is temporary), or if you have had a bad experience in the past with chiropractic, then you need to consider a visit to my office.
If you call and make an appointment for an evaluation and state that you read this on our web site, your complete examination will be performed at no charge. You have nothing to lose. Let me determine if I can help you, if we can we will, if we can’t we will give you advise as to who may.

Tissue Specific, Patient Centered Care

At Body Rehab, we beleive that a specific diagnosis is the first step to successful treatment. We perform a thorough examination to pinpoint the factors that are resulting in your pain. This includes a complete medical history assessment to ascertain the cause of injury. We then develop ways to remove the offending activity and to prevent it from happening again. Our treatments are focused to address the area of concern quickly and completely.

Chiropractic - Adjusting Subluxations

Chiropractic care corrects subluxations. Subluxations are joint restrictions and uneven spinal alignments that result in biomechanical dysfunction.

Biomechanical dysfunction causes excessive wear and eventual break down of surrounding tissue (muscles, ligaments, joint coverings). As this tissue breaks down, it begins the process of inflammation which irritates nearby nerves.

In addition, as normal tissue fails, adaptive mechanisms attempt to fuse the spine and brace it from further movement into injury. Arthritis, poor posture and bone spurs are ways in which the spine attempts to fuse.

Chiropractic Manipulation corrects subluxations and restores normal function to your joints, easing the wear on your muscles, tendons, and ligaments, reducing the irritation of the nearby nerves, and preventing the changes that result in arthritis and poor posture.

Physiotherapy

To decrease the pain and effects that occur with an acute (presently painful) condition, we also use physiotherapy modalities. These are therapies that are non-invasive and act directly upon the affected tissue to reduce inflammation and increase functionality. These modalities include interferrential current, ultrasound, hot moist packs, and vibromassage.

Exercise Rehabilitation

The entire length of the human spine is covered by seven layers of muscles that act to carry out the various functions that we ask of our bodies. They all work in concert to produce fluid, coordinated movements. When some muscles get weak, the coordination fails, ultimately leading to subluxations that only worsen the problem. Our exercise rehabilitation programs improve the muscular function of the spine. This is a key element in preventing future injury and prolonging the positive aspects of a chiropractic adjustment.

Patient Education

By better knowing how your body works and why there is a problem, you empower yourself to avoid positions and practices that cause or worsen injury. We educate all of our patients on the structure and function of their spines and how they came to be injured.
